Testimonials

On My India

Sowmya Ayyar is a long-time friend, more famous as an international Yoga Practitioner. She has been a fellow-traveler of United Religions Initiative for many years. Born and brought up in California and educated at Santa Clara University, her new book of poems, “My India” is far more than a collection of poems; it is a heartfelt pilgrimage through the soul of a timeless civilization. With lyrical grace and spiritual sensitivity, the poet invites readers to discover India not merely as a geographical entity, but as a living consciousness that nourishes the mind, awakens the heart, and elevates the spirit.

The strength of this collection lies in its authenticity. As a seeker deeply immersed in India’s cultural and spiritual heritage, Sowmya writes with reverence rather than romanticism. Every poem reflects lived experience, thoughtful observation, and an intimate dialogue with the land, its people, its sacred rivers, its music, and its ancient wisdom. The poems become milestones on a journey where every landscape reveals a lesson, every tradition becomes a source of inspiration, and every encounter deepens one’s understanding of humanity.

One of the most compelling features of My India is the seamless fusion of poetry with philosophy. Yoga is presented not simply as a physical discipline but as a way of life that harmonizes body, mind, and soul. The philosophical reflections draw upon India’s timeless spiritual traditions without becoming didactic, allowing readers to experience profound truths through beautiful imagery and evocative language.

The section on Ragamala is particularly captivating. Here, music and poetry embrace each other, creating verses that resonate with rhythm, colour, and emotion. The poems remind us that India’s artistic traditions are inseparable from its spiritual quest, where sound itself becomes a pathway to transcendence.

Sowmya’s language is elegant yet accessible. Her imagery is vivid, painting pictures of mountains, rivers, temples, gardens, and bustling towns while simultaneously revealing their symbolic significance. Her voice is contemplative, compassionate, and filled with gratitude. She celebrates diversity without losing sight of the underlying unity that has always defined India’s civilizational ethos.

My India also serves as a bridge between cultures. As someone who approaches India with both ancestral connection and fresh curiosity, the poet offers a perspective that is at once deeply personal and universally appealing. Readers from India will rediscover the beauty of their own heritage, while international readers will find an inviting doorway into India’s rich spiritual and cultural landscape.

Ultimately, My India is a celebration of belonging—not merely to a nation, but to an enduring tradition of wisdom, compassion, and inner awakening. It reminds us that India is not only a destination to be visited but a profound experience to be lived.

Sowmya Ayyar has given readers a collection that is intellectually enriching, spiritually uplifting, and aesthetically delightful. My India deserves a cherished place among contemporary works that celebrate the enduring spirit of India through the timeless language of poetry.
